Visiting Vietnam's Villages Respectfully

How to approach local culture, photography, homestays and community visits.

Updated 2026-11-04 · General travel guidance

Ask before taking photographs

People are not attractions. Ask permission before photographing individuals, especially children or people working at home.

Respect a refusal without pressure. Avoid sharing images that reveal private details or make people uncomfortable.

Choose meaningful experiences

Look for guides and hosts who can explain local customs accurately and whose communities benefit fairly from tourism.

Ask who runs the experience, how local people participate and whether the itinerary respects privacy and everyday routines.

Be considerate in homes and sacred spaces

Follow your host's guidance about footwear, seating, clothing and photography. A small courtesy matters more than performing a scripted cultural interaction.

Do not enter homes, fields or places of worship without permission. Leave gates and paths as you found them.

Buy and give thoughtfully

Pay fair prices for crafts you genuinely value and ask before bargaining aggressively. Avoid distributing sweets or money to children as an impromptu photo opportunity.

Take your litter away and reduce single-use packaging where practical. Carry a reusable water bottle when safe refill options are available.

Common questions

Should I visit villages without a guide?

Some public areas can be visited independently, but local guidance can help with access, language and respectful interaction.
