A beginner-friendly guide to eating well and traveling respectfully.

Start with regional specialties
Vietnamese cooking is diverse. Try phở or bún chả in Hanoi, cao lầu in Hoi An, and regional noodle soups and fresh produce wherever you travel.
Busy stalls with steady turnover can be a useful sign, but use your judgment about food handling and cleanliness.
Ordering with dietary needs
If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, carry a clearly translated explanation and confirm ingredients directly. Broths, sauces and garnishes may contain ingredients not obvious from the dish name.
Vegetarian options exist, but clarify whether fish sauce or meat stock is used if you avoid them.
Respectful cultural encounters
Ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in minority communities or private homes. Respect sacred spaces and local dress expectations.
Learn a few basic Vietnamese greetings. A friendly attitude and patience matter more than perfect pronunciation.
