Getting Around Vietnam: Flights, Trains, Buses and Cars

Choose transport by distance, comfort, scenery and time—not price alone.

Domestic flights

Flights can save substantial time between distant regions, especially when a short holiday includes both north and south. Compare total door-to-door time, including airport transfers and check-in.

Keep some buffer before international departures and avoid scheduling a tight connection after a weather-sensitive excursion.

Trains

Trains are useful for travelers who enjoy scenery and prefer a slower journey. Sleeper services can be convenient, but comfort varies by carriage and operator.

Buy through reputable channels and confirm station names, berth type and departure date carefully.

Intercity buses

Buses reach many destinations not served by rail. Vehicle types, pickup points and driving standards vary; compare operator reputation and realistic travel times.

For mountainous roads, consider daytime departures and allow additional time in poor weather.

Private cars and local rides

A private car can be practical for families, remote attractions or itineraries with several stops. Agree on what is included—tolls, waiting time and pickup location—before booking.

In cities, established ride-hailing apps and metered taxis are common options. Verify the vehicle and driver before entering.
