First Trip to Vietnam: A Checklist That Actually Helps

A practical checklist for arrival, documents, transport and your first 48 hours.

Updated 2026-11-04 · General travel guidance

Four weeks before departure

Check passport validity, visa or visa exemption eligibility and entry requirements through official government sources. Save copies of confirmed travel documents offline.

Check your travel insurance wording for activities you plan to do. If trekking, riding a motorbike or cruising, do not assume every activity is automatically covered.

One week before departure

Confirm the address and contact details of your first accommodation, arrival airport terminal and the safest way to reach your hotel.

Download offline maps, a translation app and your booking confirmations. Notify your bank of travel if your bank recommends it, and arrange a backup payment method.

In your hand luggage

Carry medication in original packaging where practical, essential prescriptions, a charging cable, a light layer and a small amount of accessible cash.

Keep a photo of your passport separately from the original. Never leave your passport as an unsecured deposit for a rental.

Your first 48 hours

Choose one or two activities near your hotel rather than planning a full sightseeing day after a long flight. Hydrate and allow time to adjust.

Use established transport services, check prices before purchasing and ask hotel staff about nearby ATMs and local customs.

Common questions

Should I exchange all my money before arrival?

No. A modest amount for immediate expenses plus access to a reputable ATM is usually more flexible.
